Some important information about a favorite dog treat.
Today is National Peanut Butter Lover's Day, and what dog doesn't love peanut butter? Peanut butter can be a great treat for dogs, either baked in biscuits or stuffed in a toy like a Kong for a dog to work on. Peanut butter can be a cause for serious concern though!
The Federal Food & Drug Administration cautions to always check the labels for peanut butter products that you are going to use with your dog. Some brands contain xylitol, which is an ingredient commonly found in gum. Xylitol is highly toxic to dog and can lead to serious damage to your dog's pancreas and can be fatal if not quickly treated. DVM News cautions that you may also not see the word "xylitol" in the ingredient list so avoid any product that lists "sugar alcohol" and take special care with anything labeled "sugar free" or "no sugar added." You can find a list of known peanut butters that contain xylitol on the Preventative Vet website.
