Top Dog Names in 2017

What were the top dog names used in 2017?


Rover.com compiled its annual list of the top dog names based on their survey of pet sitters and dog walkers.


The top ten names for males dogs are:
  1. Max
  2. Charlie
  3. Cooper
  4. Buddy
  5. Jack
  6. Rocky
  7. Oliver
  8. Bear
  9. Duke
  10. Tucker
and the top ten female dog names are:
  1. Bella
  2. Lucy
  3. Daisy
  4. Luna
  5. Lola
  6. Sadie
  7. Molly
  8. Maggie
  9. Bailey
  10. Sophie
Some trends that Rover.com found in their survey were:
  • 44% of all dogs names were "human" names such as Jack, Bob, Mary, etc.
  • "Powerful" female names are on the rise, such as names based on powerful real women (i.e. Oprah) and powerful fictional women (i.e. Katniss, Wonder Woman-themed names).
  • Names based on televisions shows increased by 17% (with a 182% increase for the name Barb and 166% for the name Eleven from the popular Netflix show Stranger Things.
  • Likewise names based on the popular HBO show Game of Thrones were up 12% with the five most popular being Khaleesi, Snow, Arya, Jamie, and Sansa.
  • Star Wars-themed names were up 70%. The top five were Finn, Luke, Leia, Rey and Yoda.
  • Overall, 53% of dog owners named their pet after a fictional character from a television show, movie or book, or on a popular celebrity in the entertainment world.
  • Dogs named after places were also popular. The most popular city-based names are Sydney, Dallas, Rio, Phoenix and Savannah and the two five state-based names are Georgia, Montana, Indiana, Maine and Alaska.
