USDAA Letter

By Kenneth Tatsch, President

2016 is starting out with a bang with the first Regional of the tournament season over New Year's weekend in Tempe, AZ, and later this week, the final selection trial for participating on the 2016 IFCS World Team. Click over to cynosport.tv on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to watch the Team Selection rounds, which will include commentary by Greg Fontaine. Remember to watch the USDAA news and Facebook pages as we post results to see who will round out Team USA for the IFCS World Championships in April. Team selection rules for 2017 will be released in the near future.

Mark your calendars now for June 16-19, and plan to participate in USDAA's new TitleMania®. This is a planned three and one half day event focused on recognizing and testing the diverse set of skills and strategies that are honed in USDAA's titling program. Other activities are being planned in conjunction with this event. TitleMania® will be held at the state-of-the-art indoor football complex on artificial turf at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

TitleMania® is open to all competitors, requiring only a USDAA or World Cynosport Rally registration, and is being offered in four levels—Starters, Advanced, Masters, and Masters Challenge for both Championship and Performance divisions. Veterans classes will also be offered.

Regular title qualifications will be recognized, with special awards for best cumulative scores through three rounds in each class type—Gamblers, Jumpers, Snooker, and Standard, and event versatility awards being based upon points earned through all twelve rounds of the four class types. This event is different in that qualifying scores are required to earn points toward special event awards. Full details will be out in early February. So take the challenge and see how far you can advance.

We have been busy throughout the past month digesting comments and feedback on a variety of topics posed to the Advisory Committee shortly before the end of the year—addressing conditions and circumstances by which bitches in season may participate in local events, offering special classes with training or "schooling" opportunities at local trials, and formalizing an interpretation on what options a competitor has when a dog measures up during check-in. We will soon publish proposed rules amendments on these topics for public comment. Watch for these posts later this month. We welcome your constructive feedback.

Also for this year, we are continuing work on our new web site for release later in the year, and we are conducting two judging clinics—one in Texas at the end of February and one in Minnesota at the end of June. Whether you want to be a judge, or simply want to "up your game", don't delay in signing up for one of these two clinics in 2016.

Finally, looking toward the end of the year, we recently finished our initial site inspection as part of our first steps in preparation for Cynosport® 2016. We are excited about returning to WestWorld in Scottsdale after a six-year absence. If past experience is any indication, it will be an event you won't want to miss.

The Three R's of Start Line Stays

Whether your dog has a fabulous stay on the start line, regularly breaks the start line or needs encouragement to break more quickly at the start, maintaining connection with your dog to drive off the line when they are released truly sets the tone for your entire run.

Lori Michaels provides some great advice on improving start line stays with her Three R's - Release Cues, Reinforcement and Revving.

Our Thanks to Darlene Woz

Major Milestone Celebrations

In 2015, there were several 25th anniversary celebrations and even a 30th anniversary in 2015 to commemorate hosting USDAA shows. But leave to the folks in Texas to plan festivities in large fashion!

Bexar Regional Agility Team celebrated 25 years this past November and decided to do an all-out party! They outdid themselves with their planning efforts which increased entries by over forty percent.

Not to be outdone by their friends in Houston, Dallas Agility Working Group celebrated 30 years in style. They even created a timeline of their history and all they have done for the community while promoting the sport to others.

Small Dog Mafia

They live in northern California. They are small in size but huge in accomplishments. They love to Gamble and are regularly listed in the Top Ten standings in both Championship and Performance divisions.

These competitors have trained together, traveled together and supported each other through thick and thin. There were a few different versions of the group's name along the way, but find out how and
who coined the term Small Dog Mafia.
